After the 13th century when the Chandela Dynasty declined these temples were raided by the Muslim rulers who invaded India. They destroyed several temples in the 14th century. But Khajuraho’s location is quite remote which somehow was a boon and they were forgotten and remained hidden under thick date palm trees which gave them their name Khajuraho after the Hindi name for date which is Khajur. These temples were rediscovered only in 1838 by a British Captain by the name of T.S.Burt. However, out of 85 exquisitely carved temples, just 22 had survived the face of time.
